Chinese scientists invented a material that can purify water under the influence of light

Chinese scientists have created a new material that can clean contaminated water under the influence of light. This information was provided by Shanghai Institute of Silicate Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The material is a mixture of graphene and titanium dioxide. According to the scientific director of the institute Huang Fujian, graphene, due to the three-dimensional structure, "grasps mud", and titanium dioxide, being a photocatalyst, accelerates the process of photochemical degradation of toxic organic substances.

For a month, the Institute's researchers tested the material in the territory of Shanghai and Anhui and Jiangsu provinces in the east of China. According to the test results, the water quality indicators in the rivers and lakes significantly increased approximately two weeks after the placement of the networks with the coating of the new material.

The invention of Chinese scientists has already begun to be produced on an industrial scale. This material allows to effectively reduce the concentration of heavy metals and can be widely used for industrial sewage treatment, Belta reports.
