It was announced in March that London’s Underground stations would roll out Wi-Fi services this year, and today Transport for London announced the first stations that would benefit from this development.
Over the coming weeks, Wi-Fi services will be provided at some of the city’s busiest stations, including Oxford Circus, Liverpool Street, London Bridge and Kings Cross; by the end of the year some 120 different Tube stations should be connected. Customers availing of the service will be able to use Wi-Fi at station platforms but not when transiting through tunnels.
Although exact dates have yet to be released, TfL is confident that the service will run smoothly when activated. Virgin Media is the service provider and the company recently conducted capacity testing at Chancery Lane Underground station by connecting hundreds of devices to the station’s Wi-Fi service at exactly the same time.Over the Olympics period commuters will be able to use the service for free.
Thereafter charges will be imposed for most users wishing to access the service. Virgin Media mobile phone and broadband customers will have the option of accessing the service as part of their existing contracts, while other non-paying users will be limited to a TfL portal offering real-time TfL service information, a journey-planner application and entertainment and news content.
The service will be self-funding, with no costs incurred by fare payers or tax payers. The announcement that Wi-Fi access would be available on the Tube network followed January’s partnership between O2, Westminster council and Kensington and Chelsea council to turn part of the capital into Europe’s largest free wireless hub.
