Dubai Police Chief starts tweeting

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, recently joined Twitter as the first senior police official to use the microblogging site. Now with over 2,500 followers, Tamim discusses almost everything through Twitter, from topics concerning society, such as issues of concern in residential areas to “wasta” (influence) to dirty TV channels to tweeting spontaneous poetry written by him.
Explaining that many people might not have easy access to officials through other means, Tamim said, “I want to be closer to the community’s queries or complaints. I am focusing basically on people’s concerns about Dubai Police and I refer them to the appropriate departments. However, if there are concerns about other departments, I will still refer them to those concerned departments.” Tamim also launched a campaign at Dubai Police titled “I am a service officer; tell us how do you want us to serve you?” to encourage other government officials to follow his example.
The Twitter account has also been used to communicate special announcements such as the discounts for traffic fines in the emirate of Dubai. Tamim personally communicates with each inquiring follower, sometimes replying instantly and other times getting back to the follower at a later time, even giving his mobile number for a follow up
