The market researcher estimated Amazon's global audience exceeded 282 million visitors in June, or roughly 20% of the worldwide Internet population. Other top brands in the study included eBay Inc., which reached 16% of global Internet visitors, China's Alibaba.com Ltd. with 11%, and Apple Inc. with 9.7%.
ComScore founder and Chairman Gian Fulgoni said that while retail e-commerce has already grown to become a more than $150 billion annual industry in the U.S.,"it still presents enormous upside opportunity across much of the globe."
EBay had about 223.5 million visitors during the month, while Alibaba's totaled 156.8 million. Other notable companies in the study includes U.S. retailing giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc., with 44.7 million unique visitors, and Hewlett-Packard Co., which had 38.5 million.
The researcher also found Amazon and Apple sites showed more globally diverse audiences compared to most other brands in the study. China's Alibaba.com and Japan's Rakuten Inc., meanwhile, saw a large majority of traffic derived from the Asia Pacific region.
