44% of the world’s population will have internet access in 2016

Latest predictions made by the International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that about 44 percent of the world’s population would have internet access in 2016. Specifically, it said 3.2 billion people will be able to use the internet. It predicted that more than 2 billion of the total estimates will be accessing the internet via mobile devices. The total number of mobile Internet users is forecast to rise at a pace of 2% annually through 2020 unless significant new methods of accessing the Internet are introduced.

“Over the next five years global growth in the number of people accessing the Internet exclusively through mobile devices will grow by more than 25% per year while the amount of time we spend on them continues to grow. This change in the way we access the Internet is fueling explosive growth in mobile commerce and mobile advertising,” said Scott Strawn , Program Director, Strategic Advisory Service.

IDC researchers also noted that as data breaches continue to be mainstream with organizations working hard to deploy advanced solutions to address the threat, the security products market showed stronger-than-expected growth.

Research director, Rob Ayoub said: “This growth was led by strong growth in security and vulnerability management along with network security and identity and access management. IDC expects these strong growth trends to continue as organizations of all sizes work diligently to protect customer, consumer, patient, and business partner data.”
