First SosTariffe identified the main alternatives to WhatsApp to send and receive messages and photos. Among these the most spread are: Telegram, Hangouts, Line, Viber, Facebook Messenger and Skype.
To estimate the consumption of each app, SosTariffe performed a trial for 1 hour of use on smartphones and data network 4G/Lte, simulating the three consumption profiles. The results of the test show that Telegram consumes less data traffic.
As you will note from the surveys of SosTariffe, Telegram is the only messaging app that turns out to be less expensive, from the point of view of data traffic. This application, in fact, consumes 35% to 40% less as compared to WhatsApp consuming from 0.42 Mb to 3.75 Mb per 1 hour of use.
All the other applications analyzed are the most energy-intensive of WhatsApp, which has an energy consumption that ranges from 0.65 Mb to 6,23 Mb per hour, according to the profile analyzed.
Hangouts and Line seem to be more similar to WhatsApp in terms of consumption: they, in fact, consume from 6% to 18% more than the app purchased by Facebook. Note that Line is the most convenient app in terms of consumption, given that this application consumes 6% less than WhatsApp.
Viber, Facebook Messenger and Skype have consumption much higher than WhatsApp. For Viber, in fact, it is more than double: for 1 hour use of this application, in fact, you consume 1.56 Mb 15.26 Mb.
For Facebook Messenger and Skype consumption ranges from 2,05 Mb to 22,22 Mb.
Which messenger app consumes less data traffic?
