Kaspersky Lab says hackers turn to industrial enterprises

Hackers are mastering attacks on industrial enterprises, and 28% of them worldwide faced hacker attacks in 2017, up 8 percentage points on the year, while 22% of Russian enterprises faced such attacks, business daily Vedomosti reported on Wednesday, citing data of antivirus software maker Kaspersky Lab’s poll.

The main peculiarity and danger of target attacks are that they are thoroughly elaborated for each certain organization. They steal confidential data, cause production downtime, or undermine reputation. Hackers can also influence the production process itself.

Steelmaker Severstal witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of target cyberattacks, but effectively fought back, a company spokesperson said.

Yelena Demyanova, vice president for IT development at steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) said the company has also seen an increased number of attacks, but they were all resisted. The situation with cyberattacks will hardly improve, this is why the steelmaker focuses on their detection and prevention, she said.
