It is supposed that the apps stole the data from credit cards and information for mobile banking. The apps were removed from the platform after the specialist told the Google team about it.
Stefanenko divided these programs into two groups: fake MetaMask is a phishing app, the other three ones are fake wallets. When phishing app is installed and launched, it requires user’s private key and wallet’s password.
The expert also posted a video in his blog where he told in details about fake wallets and noted that Neo Wallet app was downloaded more than 1000 times in October. As he notes, such apps do not create a private key for a new wallet, they just show public address of a scammer. If a user deposits money to such a wallet, he or she won’t be able to withdraw the funds because he or she does not know a private key.
Stefanenko notes that the apps are made with the help of Drag-n-Drop app builder service which do not require any special knowledge in programming area. Thus, almost everyone can create a simple program for staling personal info.
To recap, earlier, Lukas Stefanenko found fake mining app in and an app stealing crypto exchanges’ users’ data in Google Play Store.
