The Electronic Security Service under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies warns citizens of phishing campaigns carried out on behalf of WhatsApp Inc. Thus, cybercriminals send users fake messages via WhatsApp in order to lure them into a trap and seize their personal information. The messages say that the user’s mobile number allegedly won the WhatsApp COVID-19 campaign and was awarded a cash prize of $ 700,000. To receive this award, the user must send the registration number indicated in the message to the e-mail address process@intldraws.com.
The user who trusts the information and wrote to this email address receives message “Congrats! Your mobile number has been selected as a lucky number by WhatsApp Inc.” and personal information (such as first name, last name, country of residence, nationality, gender, marital status) are required to transfer the payment.
A fake gift certificate is sent to the user who provided the information from another e-mail address (programintl.info@gmail.com) and is required to send an e-mail to remittance@creditsunion.cc in order to conduct banking operations. In response to this e-mail, the user is asked to provide bank account information and ID card in order for making a transfer from a fake Credit Union Bank. When the user provides this information, it falls into the hands of a cyber fraudster and is used for committing other malicious acts.
The first way to protect yourself from such cyberattacks is to be suspicious of every message you receive, not to succumb to deception, not to respond to tempting offers immediately and verify the accuracy of information using various communication tools.
Users receiving such messages are asked not to reply to them and to report them as spam by selecting “Report Spam”. When you receive such information on behalf of any company, institution or organization, please first verify the accuracy of the information by contacting the company or visiting its official website on a new page opened in a web browser.
