Mass computerization allows citizens to become full-fledged members of information society

Azerbaijan pursues the ICT policy, which has a positive influence on the development of the internet. Today, 65% of the population in Azerbaijan is using the internet, and this index is 1,5 – 2 times higher than the world average.

This information was provided to ICTnews by an employee of  the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan Tarana Safarova.  According to her, ITs play a significant role in the modern society.

So, Azerbaijan attaches special attention to ICT. ‘Modern people, including Azerbaijani citizens, are surrounded with modern technologies in their everyday lives. If a few years ago people associated information technologies with computers and the internet, at present we are completely surrounded with ITs at different levels of our lives.  

Today, when we want identify  a life standard of citizens of the certain country we use the integration of ITs into people’s lives as an important factor in our assessment. In is very important to provide people with access to information technologies in this regard, because mass computerization allows people to become a full members of information society and take advantage of ITs’ achievements.

Azerbaijan is also conducting activities towards establishing the information community and widening application of ICTs. In 2003 our National Leader approved the ‘National Strategy on information and communication technologies for the development of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2003 – 2012’, the main document which outlines policies, aims, responsibilities, priorities and activities of the state in this direction.

Azerbaijan was among the countries who were first to adopt the National Strategy on ICT in line with the decision made at the UN’ Millennium Summit held in 2000. In Southern Caucasus Azerbaijan was the first country to adopt this strategy.

This document testifies to the entire world how a great attention the Azerbaijani Government pays to ICT.  At the same time, by voicing the ‘Let’s convert black gold to human gold’ thesis at the World Information Communication Summit held in Geneva on December 12, 2003 the Azerbaijani President paved the way to the new stage of the development of the country’s economy.  

This summit was a very significant event for the future development of the humanity, and this statement made by our President there gave a start to the  state-level  building of the information society in our Republic.
