India Improves Mail Processing System

The Department of Posts unveiled recently a new mail processing facility in Delhi as part of its efforts to modernise the mail processing operations at India Post, the FutureGov reported. Prior to tits establishment, Delhi’s first class and express mail was handled by more than 12 smaller mail sorting centres.

At present, operations have been consolidated into the new facility which can process up to 55,000 mail items per hour, including about 35,000 letters and 20,000 mixed mail packages.

The new facility includes a INR 420m ($7.55m USD) investment in a letter sorting machine and mixed mail sorter system which uses optical character recognition technology and a video coding system to read addresses and sort items for the correct destination.

The automated mail processing system which was installed by Siemens, is capable of processing various types of mails such as packages, plastic-wrapped items, magazines and letters. According to an official statement, the facility will enable India Post to significantly reduce processing time, improve productivity and improve sorting errors thereby allowing them to deliver high quality services to its clients.
