Global smartphone installed base will tap 3 billion mark in 2016

According to the latest report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) services: Global Smartphone Installed Base by Operating Systems for 88 Countries 2007 to 2022, global smartphone installed base will reach 3 billion mark this year, up 13% YoY.

The global 1 billion smartphone installed base mark was achieved in 2012 and the 2 billion mark was in 2014. We forecast that the 3 billion mark and the 4 billion mark will be passed in 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Android will maintain top spot as the world's most popular platform, followed by Apple's iOS. Tizen is among the faster-growing platforms over the next six years. Meanwhile, we forecast a flavor of China's own home-developed smartphone operating system will likely emerge from roughly 2018 onwards, based perhaps on Linux or similar, and will quickly gain ground in China.

This extensive report forecasts the global smartphone installed base, by 14 operating systems, for 88 countries worldwide, from 2007 to 2022. Almost every major country worldwide is covered, including United States, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
