"A program to issue visas electronically is being drafted. It envisages a period of 15 days for the issuance of a visa. In future, this period could be reduced," Abulfas Garayev told a meeting at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to review 2011, declared the Year of Tourism.
He hoped that the system could be introduced this summer.
The minister recalled that under a presidential instruction visas would be issued at Azerbaijan's international airports for visitors to the Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Baku in May.
At present, visitors to Azerbaijan have to apply for visas at the nearest Azerbaijani embassy or consulate, with the exception of residents of a country which has direct flights to Azerbaijan but no embassy.
Baku to introduce online visa application process
