Electronic atlas of mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan to be developed

An atlas of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan will be published in early 2013, head of the department on mud volcanoes of the Institute of Geology of the National Academy of Sciences Adil Aliyev said media. According to him, the atlas will contain tectonic and geological maps, profiles, geological sections and space photos. The atlas will be published in three languages (Azerbaijani, Russian and English) and be available in digital format. "The first atlas of the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan was published in 1971.

Works on compiling an updated one were conducted during the past three and a half years. Today, mud volcanoes are found in 37 countries. They are located in all the continents of the world," Aliyev said. The Institute of Geology is conducting research related to the recent eruption of a mud volcano in the country. The studies define occurring geological processes, measure the activity more accurately and determine how seismic activity affects the volcanoes.

Research results will be announced in mid-January. The studies cover the mud volcanoes of Absheron, Gobustan and Shamakhi. Creation of 3D models of extinct volcanoes is also planned by the Geology Institute after the launch.
