Scientists have invented a new prosthesis controlled by the brain

Scientists from John Hopkins University have created a prosthetic controlled by the brain. It is the first device able to move fingers individually. The staff of the Johns Hopkins University has successfully completed tests of a new prosthesis, controlled by brain. Feature of the device is that it can wiggle your toes individually, while his counterparts are only able to perform motion capture using all of your fingers simultaneously.

In order to create such technology, scientists have carefully studied the human brain and found out what parts are responsible for movement of fingers. Later, the experts have programmed the prosthesis to monitor brain signals and convert them into movement of a joint. During the experiments the researchers connected the brain of a volunteer 128 of electrode sensors placed on a rectangular sheet of film, the size of which is similar to a credit card. Subjects moved the fingers, and the control program recorded which parts of the brain are active during certain movements of the finger.

According to experts, this method proved to be more productive than others. His accuracy was 76%. Now scientists intend to develop a less expensive prosthesis, since the above technology requires a huge investment. It is assumed that the first prototypes of such devices will be created in 2-3 years.
