German hydrogen-powered plane made its first flight

Today in Europe there are several programs that pursue the goal of creating environmentally friendly and relatively cheap transportation

The German perspective the four-seater HY4 with hydrogen fuel cell made its first flight. Writes nplus1.ru citing Aviation Week, test aircraft, was developed by company H2Fly, was considered a success. On the basis of HY4 is planned to develop larger hydrogen passenger aircraft, designed to carry up to 19 people.

Today in Europe there are several programs that pursue the goal of creating environmentally friendly and relatively cheap transportation: cars, trains, airplanes and helicopters. One of the most promising areas in aviation, the developers believe electric airplanes and helicopters, the power to the electric motors which provide hydrogen fuel cells or batteries.

New hydrogen aircraft HY4 created on the basis of the Slovenian electric aircraft Pipistrel Taurus Electro G4. The aircraft built under the scheme with the two fuselages and one electric motor with tractor propeller between them. The power of the electric motor is 80 kW. In the nose of each fuselage cabins for two people.

H2Fly additionally equipped with Slovenian plane with two tanks, which under the pressure of stored hydrogen, low-temperature fuel cells and a 45 kilowatt lithium polymer battery. In the plane of the hydrogen fuel cell produces electricity that feeds the on-Board systems, the electric motor and recharges the batteries.

The mass of the hydrogen tanks is 170 pounds. They are able to under pressure to hold 9 kilograms of hydrogen. The mass of a hydrogen fuel cell is 100 kilograms, and the battery is 135 pounds. HY4 empty weight is 1.5 tons. The aircraft can reach a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and make flights on distance up to 1,500 kilometers.

The German developer plans to use the new hydrogen-powered aircraft for quick transportation of passengers between towns within Germany. Exactly when the new aircraft will begin operating regular flights, is still unknown.

Earlier it became known that the German company e-volo has decided to use its electric multicopter for urban passenger transport in 2020. First, this will be used for double devices VC200, but with 2022 to routes will the new Quad multicopter VC400.
