A new bilingual device designed to ensure safety at the airport is an automated virtual agent establishing the truth in real time (AVATAR).
This robotic device is currently being tested by US researchers in conjunction with the Canadian Border Services Agency to find out how such agents of Border Security can help determine whether the travellers who come to the country have hidden motives.
Communication with the system is very similar to the registration at the airport or at the supermarket, according to the authors of the study.
The researchers describe the device, which looks like a monitor with a virtual interlocutor asking questions.
Simultaneously, the devise fixes changes in physiology and behaviour of the passenger.
The system detects the specific signals associated with the eyes, the voice, gestures, postures, allowing detecting a potential risk.
The passenger is asked a series of questions and the software focused on tracking changes is analysing this answer.
It can detect the physiological signs of lying or specific behaviour. There are also a series of innocuous questions for basic measurements, as people are often nervous for a reason related to the upcoming flight.
According to scientists, similar systems based on artificial intelligence can be used not only for border security, but also for law enforcement, conducting interviews, and in the other areas related to the interaction with people.
The team continues to make improvements that will make the system a potentially valuable tool in many industries, according to Planet Today.
