Telegram for desktop update brings support for voice calls

Telegram for desktop has been updated to version 1.1.0 and is available from the Telegram website and through the inbuilt updater on the desktop app. The key feature in this update, which was covered in a previous article, is support for voice calls. The implementation is the same as mobile and has been billed by Telegram as being "secure, crystal-clear" and constantly improved by artificial intelligence.

While voice calling is the key feature in this release, there are several other changes. Firstly, the new emoji, stickers, and saved GIFs panel becomes a separate space on the right when Telegram is running in a wide enough window. Secondly, you can now manage the blocked users list in your supergroups. Lastly, chat admins can delete messages made by other members.

With the introduction of voice calls on the desktop client, it means that pretty much all platforms support the feature, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Although probably not what Telegram is gunning for, the release actually makes Telegram a direct competitor to apps like Skype, where their primary focus is calls, unlike Telegram’s which is on messaging.

Windows Mobile users are still waiting for the update which will give them the ability to make calls to other users. The frequency of new updates on that platform is not particularly great so it could be another couple of months before it’s updated.
