Facebook unveils standalone VR headset ‘Oculus Go’

The all new Oculus Go VR headset was unveiled at the Oculus Connect 4 event held in San Hose. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims that the Oculus Go, which will be made available to the market in early 2018, will be “the most accessible VR headset yet”.

This will be a standalone device and need not be paired with any mobile or other devices. Being a developers’ conference, Zuckerberg and his executives spent time on explaining how this opens up opportunities for the developers to work on the VR platform.

The new Oculus Go has a fast switch WQHD LCD screen and spatial audio. The headset will remain compatible with all Gear VR titles, but Facebook has plans to build its own hardware portfolio and reduce its dependence on companies like Samsung, at least for the entry level VR offerings.

There are next-generation lenses for offering a wide field of view with reduced glare.

Oculus Go has cameras on the headset and uses computer vision tech to figure out orientational tracking.

The standalone VR headset also ships with integrated spatial audio, Oculus VR added in the blog post.

Speakers are built into the headset, for transporting the user straight into VR and making the headset easy to share with someone else. There is also a 3.5-mm standard headphone jack for personal use.

The development kits are being shipped in November and other details like the battery life on the headset and the other specifications are still to be divulged. The Oculus Go will be priced at $199.

Apart from Oculus, Facebook is planning to ship to the developers the new higher-fidelity headset codenamed ‘Santa Cruz’ and this will be done in the next 12 months. This project aims at untethering the Rift headset from the PC.

Rift Core 2.0 is the newly developed software for the Rift handset with a number of new capabilities being added. These included the support for 2D desktop Windows and customizable VR home space. The 2D support permits the users to seamlessly switch within apps and company believes the Rift Core 2.0 would prove to be an advanced bit of software. The Rift bundle is now being offered directly on the Oculus site for $399, down $100 from earlier.

Oculus for Business is another announcement made at the event by Facebook. This bundle is used by businesses to train their staff and integrate VR for workplace training, collaboration and retail sales. This product, comprising Rift, Touch, three sensors, extra facial interfaces, and a four-meter dual input cable is priced at $900 and businesses can order this bundle also from Oculus’ official website.

Besides these, a host of other announcements that the Oculus developers would have interests in, were made.
