The first dedicated processor for AI from Intel has received name Nervana Neural Processor (NNP) and the release of the first models is planned for the end of this year. The new processor Nervana is a ASIC chip (application-specific integrated circuit), and it aims primarily to perform tasks in the field of deep machine learning and self-study. At the core of the processor are the data bus, which provides bi-directional exchange of large volumes of information. Thus, it is possible to combine multiple processors into a single Nervana with virtually no loss of performance. This approach allows the processor to work with multi-level neural networks. In addition, as stated by the representatives of Intel company,
“The main feature of the processor Nervana NNP is that at the core of his work on mathematics with whole numbers reduced precision Flexpoint. The advantage is the performance increase when performing tasks, reducing delays and increasing data transfer speed on the outer tires. In addition, Nervana can execute on a hardware level function of matrix addition, finding intersections and other operations. And special algorithms allow to dynamically change the CPU memory so that the architecture becomes optimal for performing a specific operation”.
Despite the vast experience of Intel in the field of creating processors, entering the chip market for AI, she will have to face such giants as Qualcomm, IBM and NVIDIA, who have long been engaged in the production of components in this field. So watch for this race will be very interesting.
Intel introduced the first processor for artificial intelligence systems
For artificial intelligence, as we know, requires huge computing power. Now, as electronic components are often the most common components (except the most powerful systems like IBM Watson). As a rule, use the solutions from consumer Intel Core up to Xeon. But all of them were created for some other task not involving working with neural networks. The company therefore decided to develop a processor that will be imprisoned to work with AI systems. The first dedicated processor for AI from Intel has received name Nervana Neural Processor (NNP) and the release of the first models is planned for the end of this year.
