Samsung grew its lead in the global smartphone market with 83.3 million units shipped, up 9.5% from Q3 last year. The South Korean tech giant's market share expanded to 22.3% this year from 20.9% in 2016, per the IDC study.
Apple, which for the first time launched three new devices in the fall, maintained its market share of 12.5% in Q3 2017 with shipments that grew 2.6% to 46.7 million from a year earlier. The iPhone maker didn't start selling its much anticipated iPhone X until early November, while the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models went on sale during the third quarter.
Apple maintained its market share even as the iPhone X struggled early on with technical issues and manufacturing delays, pushing back its shipment date from the company’s typical mid-September rollout. As the company ramps up production for the new high-tech phone, whose starting price is $999, shipments could improve the company's Q4 earnings.
IDC’s data show the biggest growth from Xiaomi, a Chinese mobile device maker that focuses on the budget market. Its shipments more than doubled to 27.6 million in Q3 2017 from a year earlier, making it the fifth-biggest smartphone maker in the world after Samsung, Apple, Huawei and OPPO, in that order. The company announced shipments of 70 million smartphones for the first 10 months of the year, meeting its yearly shipment target two months earlier than planned. The company seeks to ship 100 million handsets next year.
Oppo showed the second-fastest growth with a 16.1% gain to 30.7 million shipments in Q3 2017 from a year earlier as the Chinese handset maker continued its expansion outside the mainland, according to IDC. The company, which is now the fourth-largest handset maker, launched two new models during the quarter in India, where its marketing efforts have been focused this year. Huawei, the third-biggest smartphone maker, saw growth of 16.1% to 39.1 million shipments during the quarter from a year earlier. The company is planning to introduce a new line of products next month, including high-end phones shooting to rival higher-end devices by Samsung and Apple.
