Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 845 processor

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 845 processor, which will power most of the Android flagships in 2018. The successor to this year's Snapdragon 835 chipset was announced at the company's Snapdragon Summit in Maui, but details surrounding the next-gen processor are scarce as of now, but we'll have more on it tomorrow. What you can expect, however, is that the new Snapdragon 845 will power Xiaomi's next flagship smartphone, most likely the Mi 7, as CEO Lei Jun confirmed the same during Qualcomm's announcement. Samsung and OnePlus, among others, are also expected to rock the new chipset in their upcoming Galaxy S9 and OnePlus 6.

In its teaser, Qualcomm has hinted that the Snapdragon 845 will support ability to capture 360-degree videos in "Hollywood quality" as well as offer better battery life. The company also hinted support for more immersive virtual reality content and better inbuilt security - think chip-level encryption - with the Snapdragon 845.

Just like the Snapdragon 835, which has found its way into more than 120 high-end smartphones, the Snapdragon 845 too will be powering high-end smartphones. It is expected that the phone will power Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S9 (in some regions), high-end HTC phones, OnePlus 6, whenever it launches, Google's next generation Pixel phones and other high-end Android devices.

During the Qualcomm announcement, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun already confirmed that the company's next-generation flagship phone, which is expected to be Xiaomi Mi 7 and it should come in the first half of 2018, will use the Snapdragon 845. However, currently it is not clear whether Xiaomi will launch that phone in India or not. The Mi 6 wasn't launched but the high-end Mi Mix 2, which uses Snapdragon 835, was launched.

"Xiaomi is committed to making devices that combine cutting-edge innovations in technology and beautiful design, while defying price expectations, and we have chosen Snapdragon 845 to power our next flagship smartphone," said Jun.

During the announcement, Qualcomm also said that the Snapdragon 845 will be manufactured by Samsung using 10nm process. This is similar to how Samsung manufactured the Snapdragon 835 for the company. Just like the Snapdragon 835, the Snapdragon 845 will also come with support for gigabit LTE, although networks that can utilise such feature currently don't exist in India.

Qualcomm said that more details about the Snapdragon 845 will be revealed late on Wednesday, December 6.
