User Gets Windows RT 8.1 To Work On Lumia 640

Microsoft’s new Windows on ARM isn’t its first take on the project. Back in 2011, it announced Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 built to work on devices with 32-bit ARM processors. Unfortunately, Windows RT wasn’t successful and Windows ended support for it in 2016.

Following the release of Windows 10 ARM, some users have been trying to get it to work on their devices and a few of them have been successful. Someone else decided to install the older Windows RT on his Lumia 640 and he sure got it working.

Twitter user Ben (@imbushuo) was able to get Windows RT 8.1 on the 3-year old Lumia 640. Pictures provided show the phone in Start Screen mode as well as the traditional Start Menu mode with full desktop support.

Ben says to be able to install it, one has to be familiar with Windows Phone Partition, Windows Driver Development, Windows Kernel debugging amongst others. He also says patience is required. A note detailing the process will be made available in a few days according to him.

The Lumia 640 was released back in April 2015. It has a 5” HD screen, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It is powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor which draws power from a 2500mAh battery. Although it launched with Windows Phone 8.1, it is upgradeable to Windows 10. It also has a larger variant with a 5.7” screen called the Lumia 640 XL.
