App boss Kevin Systrom said the change was part of an "ongoing commitment to keeping Instagram an inclusive, supportive place for all voices".
The news was announced by the Facebook-owned app in a blog post by Systrom.
Instagram said that the feature will be turned on by default, so you'll have to go into your settings to turn it off.
"This new filter hides comments containing attacks on a person's appearance or character," explained Systrom.
He added that it would also hide "threats to a person's well-being or health".
The new change goes live today.
To turn it off, you'll need to go into your app settings and scroll down to Comment Controls.
Instagram said that it'll be receiving alerts about "repeated problems", and may "take action" against serial bullies.
"Since Mike and I founded Instagram, it’s been our goal to make it a safe place for self-expression and to foster kindness within the community," said Systrom.
"This update is just the next step in our mission to deliver on that promise."
This isn't the first time Instagram has automatically censored comments on the app.
In June 2017, Instagram introduce a wide-net filters for offensive comments and spam in nine different languages.
Writing last year, Systrom said: "Many of you have told us that toxic comments discourage you from enjoying Instagram and expressing yourself freely.
"To help, we’ve developed a filter that will block certain offensive comments on posts and in live video."
