LG made a few announcements prior to the start of CES 2019, but few of those are quite as unique as its Signature OLED TV announced today. The LG Signature OLED TV R (65R9) is the world's first rollable OLED TV that can be hidden away or pulled up as necessary.
The TV seems to come in a single size, 65 inches, and it includes the artificial intelligence features we're accustomed to from LG's ThinQ brand, with support for Google Assistant as well as Amazon Alexa for voice commands. All of that is powered by the company's second-generation Alpha 9 processor.
But there's more, as the TV also supports Apple's AirPlay 2 technology, so you can cast music and videos from compatible devices to the TV. HomeKit support is also included, so you can control the TV using Siri from your iPhone or iPad.
The OLED TV R offers a few usage modes thanks to its rollable nature. You can use it as a regular TV by pulling the screen out of the base entirely, which LG calls Full View. But you can also use Line View, where you only pull out a portion of the screen, and this allows you to use the TV as a clock, frame, or as a visual indicator for a music player, for example. There's also a "Mood Mode" to help create a more relaxing atmosphere.
Lastly, there's Zero View, which is when you completely roll up the TV into the metal-framed base. In this mode, you can still use the 100W speakers on the base to play music that should be loud enough for any situation. In addition to the metal frame, the base also has a natural wool cover for the speaker, so the whole package should feel very premium.
It's currently unclear when the OLED TV R will be making its way to the market, but when it does, it will likely carry a hefty price tag.
