During the period from 2013 to 2018, the number of vulnerabilities in Microsoft solutions increased by 110%, in total, in 2018, the products of the technogiant revealed more than 700 problems. These data are presented in a new report by BeyondTrust, dedicated to bugs in Microsoft software.
Over the past six years, the number of vulnerabilities classified as “critical” has also increased – by 29%. The main share of problems found in 2018 falls on remote code execution bugs (292 vulnerabilities), another 197 were described as “critical” (61%).
Last year, a total of 499 vulnerabilities were discovered in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows RT, Windows 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10 platforms, of which 169 are critical (34%). A similar number of problems were identified in Windows Server (30% are critical vulnerabilities).
Despite the comparative novelty of the Microsoft Edge browser, the number of vulnerabilities found in it (112) is three times higher than Internet Explorer (39), the report says. Its authors also indicate that in two years the number of bugs found in the Edge has increased six times. In addition, over the past six years, the number of vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Office suite has increased (by 121%).
According to the results of the analysis, the authors of the report concluded that 81% of the critical vulnerabilities from the official Microsoft security bulletins for 2019 can be eliminated simply by disabling administrator rights.
