Winners of 13th Republican Olympiad in Informatics among university students determined
On May 4, the final stage of the 13th Republican Olympiad in Informatics among university students held at the Institute of Information Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS).
The Olympiad was co-organized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Education and the Institute of Information Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
The purpose of the Olympiad, dedicated to May 17 – World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, is raising the level of knowledge of students of higher educational institutions in the field of computer science, programming, their growing interest in this area, as well as involvement of winners in the international Olympiads.
Opening the event, Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Elmir Velizade said that the Olympiad has been regularly held since 2007 and the final stages are traditionally held at the Institute of Information Technologies. He said that this institution is a leading research institute in the field of information technologies in the republic and expressed gratitude to the leadership of the institute for the conditions created.
Speaking about the Olympiad, Deputy Minister Elmir Velizade stressed that this year 69 teams from 24 higher educational institutions have registered on the www.olimpiada.az website to participate in the competition. Of these, 17 teams got through to the final round. It was noted that, along with students studying in capital’s universities, this year students from state universities of Ganja, Mingachevir, Nakhchivan, Sumgayit and Lankaran, as well as Azerbaijan University of Technology showed particular interest in participating in the Olympiad.
The Deputy Minister said the Olympiad will give impetus to the improvement of knowledge and experience of young people in the field of programming, and the development of their worldview, as well as the formation of mutual relations. He noted that today programming is widely used in all areas of society - in agriculture, tourism, healthcare, etc. Elmir Velizade called upon young people to contribute to the innovation processes in the country.
ANAS Vice-President, Director of the Institute of Information Technologies, Academician Rasim Aliguliyev stressed that the country’s leadership is constantly paying attention to the development of ICT and a number of important activities have been implemented in this direction. It was brought to the attention that today information technologies have become one of the main factors for the protection and development of the country’s economic and military power.
The event was also addressed by Chairman of the Jury of the Olympiad, associate professor of Baku State University Ramin Mahmudzade. He spoke about the role of ICT in the development of society in modern times, training of professional personnel in this field and wished the young people success.
Teacher of Baku Engineering University Etibar Seyidzade provided exact details on technical issues and procedures.
Teachers monitored the course of the competition through a video surveillance system installed at the institute to ensure transparency.
In conclusion, the results of the finals were made public. Team BEU Programmers of Baku Engineering University took the first place, team MSU_BAKU_3” of Baku Branch of Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov - 2nd place, team ADA-Firi-J of ADA University - 3rd place, and team ADNSU 1 of Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry - 4th place.
It should be noted that the winners (I-IV places) will be awarded valuable prizes from companies Azercell and BestComp Group, as well as honorary certificates and diplomas of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies on May 17.
