DDoS Attacks on the Rise After Long Period of Decline

Last year there was a significant drop in DDOS attack detection. However, according to a new survey by Kaspersky Lab, the number of attacks of this type increased significantly during the first quarter of 2019.

Security experts believe that the decline observed at that time is due to the fact that malicious agents have turned their attention to other types of attacks, Cryptomining.

However, according to statistics, the number of DDoS attacks that occurred during the first quarter of 2019 and which were blocked by Kaspersky Lab increased by 84% compared to the last quarter of 2018.

The cyber security company believes that one of the main reasons why DDoS attacks have seen a drop in popularity is that several DDoS markets have been abolished. However, once new sites have been created, the number of attacks has risen again vertically.

According to Kaspersky Lab, DDoS attacks, lasting more than one hour, doubled and their average time increased by 487%.

Survey results show that hackers have evolved their practices and are now in a position to carry out longer-lasting attacks.

Alexey Kiselev, Kaspersky DDoS Protection Business Development Manager, spoke about the evolution of these attacks:

"The new DDoS services seem to have replaced those that have been abolished by law enforcement agencies. As organizations apply key countermeasures, the attackers target them with longer-term attacks. It is difficult to say whether the number of attacks will continue to increase, but their complexity shows no signs of slowdown. We recommend businesses to prepare themselves effectively to withstand the sophisticated DDoS attacks. "

Kaspersky Lab recommends businesses to ensure that their sites and resources can handle high traffic and that they use professional solutions to deal with these types of attacks.
