A recent leak suggests that Apple could use 120Hz panels on the 2020 iPhone, which would technically mean that the Cupertino-based tech giant wantss to expand its ProMotion technology beyond the iPad Pro.
ProMotion debuted on the iPad back in 2017, offering major improvements in terms of display response and features like scrolling. With a 120Hz refresh rate, Apple could also allow the use of an Apple Pencil on the iPhone, albeit this is just a guess for the time being.
Ice Universe, who has a good track on mobile scoops, says Apple wants to use a switchable refresh rate on the next-generation iPhone coming in 2020.
This means that iPhones could adopt an approach similar to the one on the iPad, and technically be able to switch from 60Hz to 120Hz automatically whenever it’s needed. The lower setting would be useful for saving battery, especially when the content on the display doesn’t require 120Hz.
By the looks of things, Apple is already in talks with some of its suppliers for a 120Hz display, and two of them are none others than Samsung and LG. Both are already supplying displays for the iPhone, so beginning with 2020, they could manufacture the 120Hz panel too.
Next year, Apple also plans to move from LCD to OLED for the entire iPhone lineup. Currently, only the iPhone XR still uses LCD, so beginning with 2020, this device is expected to be upgraded to OLED as well.
If everything goes according to the plan, the 2020 iPhone can thus feature major display upgrades. A 5G model is expected as well following Apple’s settlement with Qualcomm, so the 2020 generation is definitely the one to wait for in terms of an iPhone overhaul.
