Not all of us are blessed with perfect English, which means from time to time, we can make a spelling or grammatical error here or there. For the most part, a lot of software and programs already come with grammar and spell-checkers built into them, and it looks like Google is finally bringing that to Gmail.
Note that spell-checking isn’t a new feature to Gmail, but according to Google, the new system will rely on artificial intelligence to make smarter corrections. According to Google:
“As you type your message, Gmail will use artificial intelligence to make smarter spell-check suggestions while also detecting potential grammar issues. For some common spelling mistakes, we’ve also added as-you-type autocorrection for improved accuracy.”
Google had previously introduced the grammar-checking function to Google Docs earlier this year, so it’s not exactly new, but it’s good to see that Google is expanding on its availability to more of its products and services. If you’ve never used or come across it before, basically, words that might be grammatically wrong will be underlined in blue, while words that are misspelled are underlined in red.
All users need to do to correct them is right-click on the words and suggestions will show up. The new spell-checking and grammar-checking features are expected to be rolled out to all G Suite accounts by mid-September, so do keep an eye out for it.
