This date is considered significant for our country, where innovations are widely used.
On the initiative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the innovation infrastructure is being formed in the country. High-tech and industrial parks have been created, and discounts have been applied to the residents of these parks. There are funds to ensure the financial performance of innovation entities, and grants and preferential loans are provided for innovative projects, and innovative entrepreneurship is developing rapidly.
The establishment of the Innovation Agency under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies by the relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated November 6, 2018 is a clear example of the head of state’s attention to this area. The Agency is legal entity of public law assisting local business entities in acquiring modern technologies and technological solutions and organizing their transfer, supporting innovative research, promoting innovative projects, startups, financing them through grants, preferential loans and investments in the authorized capital, including venture financing, promoting innovative initiative.
At the same time, the Presidential Decree dated January 10, 2019 on ensuring coordination in the field of innovative development in the Republic of Azerbaijan set out important objectives, such as developing an innovative strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, presence of innovation specialist in the governing bodies of relevant coordination entities, directing a certain part of annual income of coordination entities to the introduction of innovations and research funding, promoting the innovative initiative of employees and their skills in using digital technologies.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies organizes the “I2B – From Idea to Business” project, “InnoWeek – Innovation Week”, “InnoFest – Innovation Festival” and various competitions to promote innovative initiatives and active participation of young people in this process. Interest in these events is growing year after year. In 2019, more than 2,000 participants (youth and students from 12 regions) participated in the project “I2B – From Idea to Business”, and 153 teams competed to reach the finals.
Bakutel is one of the innovation-oriented events. Some 240 companies from 23 countries took part in the 25th Anniversary Exhibition Bakutel 2019. National groups of leading IT companies participated in the exhibition with the support of chambers of commerce and embassies of the United States, France, Italy, the UAE, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Belarus, Slovenia, Croatia and other countries.
In 2019, the exhibition, which caused particular interest, was visited by roughly 25,000 visitors, 6,000 of whom were children.
“Innofest – Innovation Festival” is held to form a startup movement in the Republic of Azerbaijan, to support the implementation of business ideas of young people, to expand the promotion of innovations and technologies, to implement new innovative ideas, as well as to establish traditions of business incubation centers in the regions.
For the first time in Azerbaijan, a total of over 1,500 people took part in the Lightest International Forum, ICT innovation and startup ecosystems seminar, the presentation of EU4 Digital program, Monex Summit, Youth Internet Governance Forum, the Made in Azerbaijan: Innovations and Technologies Forum and the 3rd Robot Olympiad organized within the framework of InnoFest from May 29 to June 4, 2019. Of whom 158 were foreign guests. And InnoFest Village was visited by more than 1800 local residents and over 300 were foreigners.
Conferences, forums and exhibitions reflecting the latest innovations in the field of high technologies and innovations are organized in our country within the framework of the International “InnoWeek – Innovation Week” held in 2018.
As part of the International InnoWeek held in 2019, Republican final of “I2B – From Idea to Business” project, “Roboday” exhibition, 2nd “Baku Electronic Commerce Forum” (BEF - 2019), round table on the topic “Political View of the Innovation Ecosystem”, Eurasia Innovation Day, Kaspersky Security Day, awards ceremony of Innovation Awards Gala took place.
“InnoWeek” was visited by more than 2800 participants, over 220 of whom were foreigners.
As a result of the measures taken, the innovation ecosystem is developing in our country. It is no coincidence that in the “Global Competitiveness Report – 2019” of the World Economic Forum, Azerbaijan ranked 21st out of a total of 141 countries in terms of “growth of innovation-oriented companies”. The increase in the number of innovation-oriented companies plays an important role in the innovative development of the country’s economy.
