In the first quarter of the year, during mass self-isolation, when people worked and studied at home, the demand for laptops and PCs was high, but, as analysts expect, the market will decline during 3 and 4 quarters of 2020. Among personal computer devices, IDC takes into account workstations, laptops, monoblocks, chromebooks and ultrabooks, tablets and mobile workstations.
The commercial sector of PC devices will suffer from the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic when organizations reduce the cost of upgrading IT infrastructure. This is especially true for small companies.
In Central and Eastern Europe, 3 percent growth is expected in the second quarter due to continued remote work and the resumption of production capacity in China. However, by the end of the year, total shipments of computer devices will fall by 14% compared to the same period last year to 360.9 million units.
IDC expects the commercial PC market to return to growth in 2021, and unit sales for the whole year will grow by 3.5%.
Analysts expect sales of consumer PCs in unit terms to fall by 21.3% in the 3rd quarter and by 14.8% in the 4th quarter, but an increase of 4% is expected here in 2021.
