The 17th round table of the Science and Technology Ministers was held in a virtual format.

The main purpose of the event is to exchange views on specific steps that need to be taken to develop science, technology and innovations in the joint fight against global threats.

At the round table, particular attention was paid to the global pandemic COVID-19, which caused a large number of victims, as well as early detection and prevention of natural disasters using the acquired knowledge and experience. An international online event attended by ministers and deputy ministers from around 50 countries, including Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Russia, Iran, Spain, Argentina and Thailand, also discussed mainly the role of collaboration in international research and issues related to social sciences and humanities.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies Ramin Guluzade spoke in detail about the latest developments taking place on the front line. The Minister recalled that over one million Azerbaijanis are still refugees due to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

As a result of the recent military provocations by Armenia, over 10 educational institutions, as well as other infrastructure have been destroyed and damaged. Ramin Guluzade reported with great regret that there were two schoolchildren – a brother and a sister among the civilians who died as a result of this aggression, and one wounded teacher. He stressed that at present, the necessary steps are being taken in response to the provocations and aggression of Armenia, which threaten the development of science and ICT, as in all areas.

Then, noting that the coronavirus pandemic completely changed the situation in the world, as a result of which new realities have emerged, the Minister reported on the work done in our country in this area: “Azerbaijan responded promptly and adequately to the new situation. A strong strategy has been adopted to combat COVID-19 and minimize the impact of the pandemic in the country. The scientific, technical and technological potential of the country was involved in the implementation of this activity and positive results were achieved. As a result of the measures taken by us during the pandemic, citizens were provided with high-quality transport, postal and telecommunication services, as well as the Internet and mobile services in accordance with the growing demand,” Ramin Guluzade said.

The Minister added that distance learning technologies were introduced in the education sector during the pandemic. “We have implemented the project Connected Schools, which was launched in a number of educational institutions in Baku. During the pandemic, in order to provide videoconferencing services, which is an important tool for government agencies and health care institutions, the project Connected Government was implemented,” Ramin Guluzade stressed.
