SuperCharge championship to kick off in 2022 with all-electric crossovers

All-electric crossovers will likely dominate the new car market in the coming decades, so it’s fitting that a new racing championship just for them has been announced.

Dubbed SuperCharge, the series is being managed by ex-Jaguar Formula 1 team commercial director Rob Armstrong and co-founder Max Welti, formerly of the Sauber F1 team, Lamborghini’s motorsport programs and the Swiss A1 GP team.

Motorsport.com reports that SuperCharge will feature eight teams made up of two cars. Each vehicle used will have a 40 kWh battery pack that drives electric motors at both axles producing roughly 660 hp. This will allow the crossovers to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in approximately 2.5 seconds.

All vehicles used will have a standardized tubular frame chassis, although teams will be allowed to customize the bodywork. Teams will also be allowed to develop the battery systems, while tech like launch control, traction control and brake-by-wire will be forbidden.

The first season will have eight events, with three in Europe, three in the Asia-Pacific region, one in the U.S. and one in the Middle East. These events will be held in parks and industrial areas near major cities. Each round will include 15 quick-fire races with a maximum of six laps on a short, mixed-surface 1 km circuit that includes a jump and a rallycross-inspired ‘joker lap.’ The events will be split into four heats, two semi-finals and a grand final.

“Alejandro Agag [Formula E co-founder and Extreme E founder] and Jean Todt [FIA president] have done a great job pioneering electric motorsport,” Armstrong said in a statement. “With many countries and cities already announcing plans to ban internal combustion-engine cars in the coming years, the need for road car-based electric motorsport is becoming more and more compelling.”

If everything goes according to plan, the championship should launch in 2022.
