China creates the first standard for robotic taxis

Led by Baidu and featuring WM Motor, Dongfeng Motor, FAW Group, BAIC Group, Bosch and Datang Telecom Technology in China developed and published the first technical standard for robotic taxis. The developers are enthusiastic about creating a “contactless” travel and delivery system, which has become extremely important in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Baidu-led standard should only be seen as a rough draft of the requirements for the robotic taxi development team. But there are hopes that it can get the status of general industrial and national standards. The Chinese authorities are focused on supporting self-driving transport and will, in one way or another, support target groups.

The standard includes technical requirements for vehicle operation as well as test methods and requirements for autonomous driving functions. The document regulates the requirements for the implementation of robotic taxis in key areas such as safety, experience, operation and testing. In particular, autonomous vehicles are required to complete a total of 30,000 kilometers of testing in various road conditions such as potholes, debris, pebble roads and highways, as well as for all key components to function properly after testing.

Self-driving cars are also required to be able to successfully perform steering, braking, gear shifting, acceleration and other operations with full passenger loads and meet operating specifications both in good weather and in poor visibility conditions on rainy days. Autonomous transport is expected to change society. Taxi drivers and delivery service drivers will not be happy about this, but they will not be the first victims of progress.
