Strategy Analytics published a report, which reveals the depth of penetration of elements of artificial intelligence into modern smartphones. According to the company, over 70% of smartphones sold this year will be endowed with some kind of built-in artificial intelligence options.
According to Strategy Analytics, the elements of artificial intelligence in smartphones are specialized hardware solutions or software with machine learning capabilities. These can be either AI coprocessors or accelerators like the Apple Neural Engine or a distributed software environment like the Qualcomm Neural Processing Engine (NPE). In any case, we are talking about data processing on a smartphone with minimal transfers to the clouds or no connection at all with remote computing resources.
Experts call the most prominent representatives of AI platforms on smartphones voice assistants. So, the leader in this area is the Google Assistant solution, which will be installed on 60% of smartphones in 2021. The second most popular is Apple’s Siri virtual assistant. Overall, voice assistants will be installed on 80% of smartphones sold in 2021, and in 2025 they will be present on 97% of mobile devices.
Another popular AI system on smartphones is considered by analysts to be camera control systems. According to experts, over 30% of smartphone cameras are already endowed with AI capabilities, for example, independently selecting objects in the frame, reacting to movements in the frame or recognizing objects in the frame.
AI also learns how to manage power, run power-saving modes, control the performance of devices and applications, and solve many other tasks that make communication with a smartphone more comfortable and easier.
