Chromebooks are laptops that run Chrome OS and are designed for regular light tasks like browsing the web, watching videos, creating and editing documents, and more, growth compared to the same quarter of last year, according to the latest data from Canalys. There were 12 million Chromebook models shipped in the quarter. On the other hand, the laptop market has also grown with 62% year-on-year growth.
Chromebook tablet shipments increased 52% in the same quarter, while desktop shipments fell 4%. Overall, the PC market grew 53.1% year-on-year with a total of 122.1 million units shipped. This growth of Chromebooks, tablets and laptops is due to the fact that more and more people are adjusting to the remote working scenario imposed by the pandemic.
HP leads Chromebook shipments with 4.3 million units and a 36.4% market share. Lenovo saw 3.1 million units shipped and a 25.9% market share. Acer captured 11.9% of the market with its 1.4 million units shipped, Samsung with its 1.2 million units shipped captured 10% of the market share and Dell recorded a market share of 8 , 4% with 1 million units shipped.
When it comes to tablet shipments, Apple led the way with its 38.2% market share and 15.1 million units shipped. Samsung and all other brands lag behind Apple with Samsung capturing 20.1% market share, Lenovo with 9.5%, Amazon with 8.7%, Huawei with 5.4% and other brands taking the 18% remaining market share.
Overall, Lenovo had the highest market share (including all four facets of the PC market) at 19.7%. Apple followed with 18.1%, HP with 15.8%, Dell with 10.7% and Samsung with 8%.
