Azerbaijan to introduce number portability service in mobile networks in 2012
Introducing Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service in Azerbaijan scheduled for 2012 will serve the interests of consumers, Bakcell Chief Commercial Director Krassimir Genov told on Saturday. Genov said that this service is available in many countries.
"Introduction of services is not technically difficult process and it can happen in Azerbaijan in mid-2012," Genov said. The Communications and IT Ministry has already given introductions and coordinated the rules to introduce MNP services with mobile communication operators.
Operators have to prepare the network infrastructure for its rendering. Service will be launched simultaneously by all three GSM-operators. Introducing MNP services will allow subscribers to reserve their phone number in case of a change in operators.
This will free them from notifying their relatives and business partners in case their number changes. The introduction of the MNP service increases competition and forces operators to take extra efforts to retain former customers while providing more attractive services to attract new ones.
